A larger hippocampus has been associated with hea lthy cognition in normal aging and with a reduced risk of Alzheimer’s dise ase. Older adults with better hippocampus-dependent spatial memory showed increased fMRI activity\, increased grey matter in the hippocampus\, and b etter overall cognition\, regardless of ApoE4 status. Therefore\, spatial memory training may provide a therapeutic avenue which may be protective a gainst Alzheimer’s disease.\n\nProfessor Oliver Hardt will focus on how an d why the brain forgets. Forgetting is thought of as a failure of memory\, a glitch\, something that should not occur\, resulting from a breakdown o f normal memory — and\, quite naturally\, most people worry about it. Howe ver\, recently it has been discovered that most forgetting is by design an d the result of dedicated forgetting processes that are part of normal bra in function. Forgetting is therefore not a failure of memory\, but a neces sary and useful function of memory. He will summarize the latest research on how and why the brain forgets\, the benefits of forgetting\, and how di sorders of forgetting might lead to excessive memory loss\, as seen in Alz heimer's disease and other conditions.\n\nWatch the recording of this pres entation\n\n\nMini-Science 2022: The Brain – Frontiers in Neuroscience\n\n Exciting presentations by some of ºÃÉ«TVl's leading neuroscientists about t he brain\, the mind and the neuroscience of living as we now understand it . Find out how the brain and memory changes as we age\, or how the bilingu al brain functions\, and how remarkably emotional our brains are.\n\nAll t alks are in English.\n\nDiscover the Mini-Science series\n DTSTART:20220427T230000Z DTEND:20220428T000000Z SUMMARY:Mini-Science public talk: The brain\, memory and cognitive aging URL:/science/channels/event/mini-science-public-talk-b rain-memory-and-cognitive-aging-335983 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
