 Professor Emmanuel Falque\, Dean Emeritus of the Faculty of Philosophy at 
 the Catholic University of Paris. This event concludes the Montreal resear
 ch seminar of the International Network in Philosophy of Religion (INPR) o
 n the theme 'Forgetting the Soul.' The event is organized by Dr. Pablo Iri
 zar\, current holder of the Kennedy Smith Chair in Catholic Studies.\n\nIn
  By Way of Obstacles\, Emmanuel Falque revisits the major themes of his wo
 rk—finitude\, the body\, and the call for philosophers and theologians to 
 'cross the Rubicon' by entering into dialogue—in light of objections that 
 have been offered. In so doing\, he offers a pathway through a work that w
 ill offer valuable insights both to newcomers to his thought and to those 
 who are already familiar with it. For it is only after one has carved out 
 one's pathway that one may see more clearly where one has been and where o
 ne might be going. Here readers will discover the profound relation betwee
 n Falque's emphasis on the human experience of the world and his desire fo
 r philosophy and Christian theology to enter into conversation. For only b
 y speaking within the human horizon of finitude can Christianity be credib
 le for human beings\, and it is because Christian theology teaches that Go
 d entered into our finitude that it can also teach us something of what it
  is to be human. Contemporary phenomenology\, Falque warns\, over- privile
 ges an encounter with the infinite that cannot be originary. Calling us ba
 ck to finitude\, he calls us to a deeper understanding of our humanity.\n

 crédible pour les êtres humains\, et c’est parce que la théologie chrétien
 ne enseigne que Dieu est entré dans notre finitude qu’il peut aussi nous e
 nseigner quelque chose de ce qu’est être humain. La phénoménologie contemp
 oraine\, prévient Falque\, privilégie une rencontre avec l’infini qui ne p
 eut être originelle. Nous rappelant à la finitude\, il nous appelle à une 
 compréhension plus profonde de notre humanité.\n
