 e current pandemic has shown the important role mathematical models play i
 n forecasting the spread of an infectious disease\, as well as in understa
 nding the factors shaping its progression. In this lecture\, I will review
  some basic epidemiological models and discuss their shortcomings when it 
 comes to modeling the spread of infectious diseases like to COVID-19. I wi
 ll then introduce the framework of contact network epidemiology and show h
 ow it can overcome many of these shortcomings. Using various case studies\
 , I will show how to use this framework and illustrate what can we learn b
 y doing so.\n
