Commonly known as 'the newspaper novel\,' sen sation novels of the 1860s took their plots from police news\, shipping ne ws\, and even the Agony Column\, a section of personal advertisements appe aring at the front of Victorian newspapers.\n\nAt a moment when novels and newspapers were both claiming to narrate a particular version of their pr esent moment\, characters in sensation novels wondered whether newspapers provided information and entertainment\, or whether they also carried with in them augurs of destiny.\n\nJoin special guest scholar Jessica Valdez to explore the relationship between Victorian sensation fiction and the news .\n\n \n\n\n Watch on YouTube\n\n\n\nAbout the Speaker\n\nJessica R. Valdez is the Visiting Belcher Fellow in Victorian Studies at St. Hugh’s College Oxford. She is currently an associate professor in English at the Univers ity of Hong Kong\, but she will leave HKU to become a lecturer at the Univ ersity of East Anglia in September 2022. Her first book\, Plotting the New s in the Victorian Novel (EUP 2020)\, will be available in paperback in Ju ne 2022. It analyzes competing understandings of national identity in nine teenth-century novels and the newspaper press. Her new book project is ten tatively called Despots and Democrats: China and America in Nineteenth-Cen tury British Literature.
