Couple & Family Therapy (M.Sc.A.)

Program Description

The Master of Science, Applied (M.Sc.A.) Couple and Family Therapy (Non-Thesis) offered by the School of Social Work in the Faculty of Arts is a course-based, clinical program that emphasizes career-focused and transformative learning opportunities. The program’s objective is to train students with expertise in couple and family psychotherapy by integrating theory, research competence, and varied approaches to therapy in the understanding and treatment of couples and families.

Unique Program Features

  • The program gives students the opportunity to advance their clinical skills and therapy practice within the academic and research context of ºÃÉ«TV, along with the clinical expertise of the Department of Psychiatry at the Jewish General Hospital;
  • Allows students to gain hands-on clinical experience under close supervision of highly experienced Couple and Family Therapists, and prepares students for practice in a variety of contexts, including public social services, community-based organizations, and private practice.
  • Students gain multicultural competences through curricula designed to reflect sensitivity to issues of race, class, gender and sexual orientation and diversity of family structures within a pluralistic, multi-cultural society;
  • The program has been approved by both the Ordre des travailleurs sociaux et des thérapeutes conjugaux et familiaux du Québec (OTSTCFQ) and as a form of psychotherapy regulated by the Ordre des Psychologues du Québec (OPQ). Graduates will qualify for two professional permits – TCF permit (OTSTCFQ) and Psychotherapist permit (OPQ);
  • The program is an accredited member of the Canadian Association for Couple and Family Therapy (CACFT).

University-Level Admission Requirements

  • An eligible Bachelor's degree with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA. For this program, an eligible Bachelor's or Master’s/PhD degree in a related human science or helping profession with a minimum 3.0 GPA out of a possible 4.0 GPA.
  • English-language proficiency
