Yet generative AI broadens the possibilities of human-AI interactions and changes the nature of interaction to a conversat ional one. In this field study of 244 global management consultants from t he Boston Consulting Group as they engaged with genAI\, we find that knowl edge professionals may engage in one of three distinct types of human-AI c o-creation that we call fused co -creation (“cyborgs\;” engaging with AI b y tightly integrating human and AI tasks)\, directed co-creation (“centaur s\;” using their knowledge of the current strengths of generative AI to sw itch between human and AI tasks accordingly)\, and abdicated co-creation ( “self-automators\;” putting their decisions and actions on autopilot\, so that they happen without conscious thought). As a result\, cyborgs newskil led themselves in new GenAI-related capabilities\, opening new potential p rofessional paths\; while centaurs upskilled themselves and strengthen the ir current profession’s/al capabilities. Self- automators did not gain new skills and are impeding their current profession’s/al capabilities. By re conceptualizing human-AI collaboration as a knowledge co-creative process between professionals and AI across the full problem-solving workflow\, ra ther than as a work process between professionals and AI at the point of d ecision making\, this paper develops new theory about how and when profess ionals can collaborate with AI and with what consequences. These findings contribute to our understanding of the future of work and knowledge of wor k professionals. Finally\, we contribute to the larger debate on automatio n vs. augmentation or professionals by illustrating the rise of a third ca tegory: transformation.\n DTSTART:20241205T153000Z DTEND:20241205T170000Z LOCATION:Online SUMMARY:CSSO Speaker Series: Hila Lifshitz URL:/desautels/channels/event/csso-speaker-series-hila -lifshitz-361292 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
