We study whether targeting corporate activities with dispersed externalities with transpare ncy reduces their environmental impact. We examine salt concentrations con sidered signatures for HF impact and find significant and lasting improvem ents in surface water quality between 9-14%\, coming mostly from the inten sive margin. We document that operators improve environmental performance\ , cause fewer HF wastewater spills and use fewer hazardous chemicals. Turn ing to how transparency regulation works\, we show that it increases publi c pressure and enables social movements\, which facilitates internalizatio n.\n DTSTART:20241025T143000Z DTEND:20241025T160000Z LOCATION:Room 255\, Donald E.
