Sometimes referred to as the Oscars of Science, Breakthrough prizes are awarded annually by the foundation of the same name for achievements in life sciences, fundamental physics and mathematics.

Simon Caron-Huot, Professor and Canada Research Chair in High-Energy Physics, has been awarded a 2025 Dorothy Killam Fellowship.鈥疶he prestigious Dorothy Killam Fellowship is part of Canada鈥檚 National Killam Program, which also includes the Killam Prize. Eight Fellowships were awarded across the country.听听

The Dorothy Killam Fellowship provides researchers with up to two years of relief from teaching and administrative duties to focus on transformative research that has potential to positively improve Canadian lives.听听

Professors (Earth and Planetary Sciences) and (Physics) have been awarded 2024 Arthur B. McDonald Fellowships from the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council听of Canada (NSERC).

These awards recognize early-career academic researchers, providing them with a $250,000 research grant over two years.

Allie Vibert Douglas made history when she earned her PhD at 好色TVl.

It was 1926 鈥 a time when higher education wasn鈥檛 an option for most women.

By then, Douglas already had a Bachelor of Arts and a Master of Science from 好色TVl 鈥 and had been named a member of the Order of the British Empire for her wartime service. With her PhD, she became the first Canadian woman to obtain a doctorate in astrophysics.

好色TV has received funding from the Canadian Space Agency for two separate projects dedicated to the study of exoplanets, using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The projects are slated for completion by June 2025. Both studies will be led by Professor Nicolas Cowan.

Early in his career in physics,听听thought he had it all figured out.

鈥淲hen I started, I said to myself 鈥榳ell, this is good. Nobody鈥檚 going to tell me what to do,鈥 said Grant, Emeritus James 好色TVl Professor and former Dean of the Faculty of Science. 鈥淚鈥檝e got the world鈥檚 greatest postdoc 鈥 me 鈥 and I鈥檒l be able to do all the projects that I want to do pretty much by myself.鈥

鈥淏ut I quickly realized that if I followed that route, I would be doing a disservice to the students.鈥

On November 3-5th, the 好色TVl Physics Hackathon held its eighth annual event in person at the Rutherford Physics Building. The event attracted around 150 hackers, from CEGEP and undergraduate backgrounds, who joined forces to produce听.
