The sexu al overture\, an attempted\nkiss\, was almost laughably trifling in compar ison with the sexual\nacts of men typically accused of indecently assaulti ng women.\nHowever\, the apprehensions of the Cold War era played out in\n unusual ways in the sexually-charged environment of the far\nnorth.\nZealo usly prosecuted\, the case resulted in a conviction at\ntrial\, but divide d the appellate court\, which wrestled with the\nconcepts of coercion and consent as they affected sexual assault\nvictims\, and how rules shaped fo r male assailants and female\nvictims should be applied in same-sex situat ions.\nAstonished legal authorities struggled with the definitions of\n'ho mosexuality' and 'lesbianism\,' as they sifted through the\nremarkable tes timony of the alleged victim\, the accused\, and\nWillimae Moore's illustr ious traveling companion\, Beatrice\nGonzales. The third woman in the tria ngle\, Beatrice Gonazles\norchestrated Willimae Moore's defence and jouste d with government\nmanagers\, the RCMP\, and lawyers as she insisted upon the innocence\nof her friend.\nThe case provides an excellent venue for ex amining ways in which\nfemale sexuality was negotiated in the workplace\, the plight of\nlesbians in Cold War culture\, and the role of the state in \nenforcing female heterosexual conformity through criminal law.\nCo-Hoste d by  the Patricia Allen Memorial Lecture\; the\nAnnie MacDonald Langstaff Workshop Series\; and the Sexual Assault\nLaw Seminar.\n \n DTSTART:20101001T163000Z DTEND:20101001T180000Z LOCATION:Chancellor Day Hall\, CA\, QC\, Montreal\, H3A 1W9\, 3644 rue Peel SUMMARY: Annie Macdonald Langstaff Workshop: Canada’s First Same-Sex “Lesb ian” Sexual Assault Prosecution URL:/channels/event/annie-macdonald-langstaff-workshop -canada%E2%80%99s-first-same-sex-%E2%80%9Clesbian%E2%80%9D-sexual-assault- prosecution-167674 END:VEVENT END:VCALENDAR
